On Thursday, June 4, 2009, 'Ohana Health Plan of Waipahu made a $5,000 donation to the Hilo Medical Center's Rural Family Practice Residency Program. The Program seeks to attract young physicians to the Big Island who will continue to serve the rural areas of all Islands upon the completion of their residency.
'Ohana serves more than 21,000 members, many of who live in rural areas that are medically underserved. This includes members on the Big Island, which is currently experiencing a physician shortage. Donations to the Program will go towards building a 4,350 square-foot clinical and educational space that will include eight exam rooms, and additional rooms for procedures, consultations and conferences, with hopes of attracting physicians, nurses and pharmacists.
